Descript vs Riverside: choose for recording, editing and total cost

Start with the part of production that causes rework

An interview show has several jobs: arranging the session, capturing usable material, deciding what to keep, editing, and delivering the episode. A product that feels convenient for one job may add work elsewhere. Write down the last three problems you had before choosing which free workflow to test.

If the difficult part is removing repetition and reorganizing an explanation, our first candidate is Descript. If the difficult part is getting each guest’s source files to a separate editor, our first candidate is Riverside. This is a way to order your evaluation, not evidence that either product always wins. Existing templates, collaborators and delivery requirements can change the choice.

Both products can record guests and edit words

Descript’s current help describes Rooms: open a room from a project and invite participants with role-specific links. An older comparison that treats Descript as an editor with no remote-recording option misses this part of the product. Try the guest journey on the equipment you expect participants to use.

Riverside documents local capture on each participant’s device and separate audio and video tracks. Its editor also supports editing through a transcript. Do not assume you must purchase a second editor immediately after recording. First see whether you can finish the episode inside the recording product.

For either test, include a guest who is unfamiliar with your setup. Note whether they can join, select the correct microphone, hear the other speaker and complete the upload. A successful solo test does not answer those questions. Check the exported files before ending your own evaluation.

Use the edit and the final file as your acceptance test

Take a short conversation with an interruption, a repeated answer and a proper name. Remove the repetition, shorten one answer and create a short clip. Listen across every cut: removing words from a transcript is not enough if the result sounds abrupt or loses the speaker’s meaning.

Inspect the episode outside the editor. Check speaker timing, framing, caption spelling and any watermark. If a collaborator needs source tracks, include that handoff in the test. If they only need a finished video, separate-track delivery may be less important than how easily you can make their requested revision.

Keep notes about the exact point where a paid feature becomes necessary. That gives you a reason to upgrade tied to your work. A feature list alone cannot tell you how many revisions your next client will ask for or whether the default layout suits the show.

Budget the workflow, including short projects

Descript Hobbyist is $24 per editor per month on monthly billing, or $192 for a full year. Creator is $35 monthly or $288 annually. The relevant differences include media allowances, AI credits and output resolution. Use our plan calculator to compare the number of months you actually expect to work with a full annual commitment.

For example, four months of Hobbyist on monthly billing cost $96 before tax, compared with $192 for the annual subscription. The lower advertised annual monthly equivalent does not make a four-month project cheaper. Eight months at $24 equals $192; the decision also depends on whether you want to commit for the full year.

Riverside’s current pricing page separates plans and billing periods. Record the quote for the plan that meets your recording and export requirements. Do not treat recording hours and another product’s media-processing allowance as interchangeable. Free-plan limits are also a trial budget, not proof that a weekly show will fit indefinitely.

If you keep both tools, add both subscriptions over the same period and count the transfers and revisions you must repeat. Paying twice can be reasonable when each tool solves a demonstrated problem. It is difficult to justify when you have not yet tried finishing one complete episode in either product.

Make one product responsible for the final revision

When recording in one product and editing in another, retain the original files and name a single final-edit project. Decide where captions are corrected and which file is the approved master. Otherwise a late change can create two incompatible versions with no obvious place to make the next correction.

A sensible starting decision is temporary: use the tool that passes your sample, choose the smallest billing commitment that fits your schedule, and reassess after producing several real episodes. Do not promise a client a workflow that you have only seen in a vendor demonstration.
