Perplexity Free vs Pro: $20 pricing, search limits and Research
Free suits everyday lookups. Its current allowance is three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month. Consider Pro for more frequent research or manual model choice, but paid access still has weekly and monthly limits.
All contents
Free and Pro at a glance
| Feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $20/month or $200/year |
| Basic search | Available | Available |
| Pro Search | 3/day | Weekly limits; no fixed count published |
| Research | 1/month | Monthly limits; no fixed count published |
| Advanced model choice | No manual choice | Available; model list can change |
| Typical use | Quick lookups, occasional longer research | Repeated research and deliberate model selection |
Checked September 14, 2026. Pro Search and Research are separate allowances. Do not substitute an older 300-per-day claim or an Enterprise allowance for the current personal Pro limits.
Use a normal working week to test Free
This is our suggested comparison, using real work rather than deliberately exhausting a quota.
Specify the finished output
For example, compare three vendors' cancellation terms in a table with plan names and source URLs. A table missing those details is still unfinished, however polished the prose looks.
Record the feature that stops
Distinguish basic search, Pro Search, Research and model selection. Keep the displayed warning and time; avoid translating unrelated credit balances into a search quota.
Measure through to a checked result
Include source verification and corrections, not just generation time. Note any work you had to repeat outside Perplexity.
Consider a paid month for a recurring problem
If the same limit repeatedly blocks work, review the subscription under Account, note the total price and renewal date, and repeat the same comparison during the paid month.
Choose the task before choosing the search mode
Finding a product's cancellation page may need only a quick lookup. Comparing three vendors' price changes over time needs several sources and a consistent table. Start by deciding which of those tasks you actually have.
A longer report is not automatically more useful. Write down the questions, date range and required sources first. If ordinary search produces the official pages you need, finish the comparison before deciding that a larger research allowance would help.
Why we do not promise a fixed daily Pro quota
The current official table describes weekly Pro Search limits and monthly Research limits without publishing fixed counts for personal Pro. Older quotas and limits for other plans are not a reliable substitute.
When something stops, record the feature name and the message shown. An unavailable model, an exhausted Research allowance and a general service problem call for different responses. Do not treat a Computer credit balance as a remaining Research-task count.
Annual savings depend on how long you subscribe
At the published prices, twelve monthly payments total $240; the annual subscription is $200, a $40 difference. Dividing $200 by twelve gives about $16.67, but that is a comparison figure, not a monthly payment option.
For a three-month project, three $20 payments total $60. An annual plan would cost more overall despite its lower monthly equivalent. Monthly billing is a reasonable starting point when your future workload is uncertain; compare annual billing when recurring use is already established.
Include source checking in your time comparison
For a software comparison, verify the price, plan name and effective date in the original page. A citation about the right product may still fail to support the specific claim in the answer.
Time the work through to a usable result: searching, checking citations and correcting the table. If generating a longer answer simply creates more checking, that extra work belongs in your comparison. The relevant outcome is a finished piece of research, not a message count.
Separate finding sources from reading sources you already have
If you already have three official PDFs, list the questions those documents need to answer. You may need fresh web research for current prices but only document analysis for the published specifications.
Our NotebookLM guide covers working from a defined set of sources. Before uploading internal documents to any tool, check your organization's rules and the relevant service terms. Paying for personal Pro does not itself authorize sharing client material.
A four-report monthly workload
A hypothetical example: each report takes 45 minutes on your current workflow and 30 minutes on an alternative, including source checks.
- Per report
- 45 − 30 = 15 minutes saved
- Four reports
- 15 × 4 = 60 minutes per month
- Monthly subscription
- Decide whether recovering that hour is worth $20
This is arithmetic, not a measured Pro speed advantage. At one report a month, the same assumption saves only 15 minutes. Use your own workload and observations.
Things to watch for
Using an old quota as a current promise
Read the present comparison and account messages. Max and Enterprise limits do not describe personal Pro.
Comparing only the annual monthly equivalent
Compare the amount you will actually pay over the months you expect to use the service.
Treating citations as completed verification
Check dates, plan scope and exceptions in the original source before using a claim in your work.
Review actual use before renewal
Check how often you used Research, whether limits interrupted work and whether a finished report took less time. If there is no regular workload, returning to Free and reconsidering later may suit you better.
